The Underground Taxi

the underground taxi

The Underground Taxi is a fictional story based on actual facts about a ruthless dictator who ruled Uganda named Idi Amin, which he ruled from 1971 to 1979. The characters are Harry Johnson, a black American cab driver, and Ekiwa Fahim, a Ugandan College student.  Idi Amin had Ekiwa placed on a hit list.  The story takes us through Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virgina, New York and Boston, where Harry and Ekiwa are pursued by two African hit men.

About Idi Amin

The Underground Taxi is a fictional story based on actual facts about a ruthless dictator who ruled Uganda named Idi Amin, which he ruled from 1971 to 1979.  He overthrew the Obote regime through a military coup, where Obote fled to neighboring country Tanzania and was offered sanctuary.  Idi Amin stole the property of businessmen and businesswomen (most of whom were Indians and citizens of Uganda) and claimed that they were not true Africans. He then gave the properties to his friends and cronies, who had no experience and virtually ran the economy into the ground.  His rule was characterized by gross human rights abuse and corruption.  He attempted to annex the Kagera province in 1978, which led to the Tanzanian war.  He fled to Saudi Arabia in 1979, where he was granted asylum.  He died on August 16, 2003, at the age of eighty.  He left behind a legacy of terror and death and was never brought to court to answer for his crimes.  His years in power remind me of what British historian Lord Acton once said:  absolute power corrupts absolutely.
